The Fingertip Contec Pulse Oximeter CMS50D1 (Canada) is a non-invasive device intended for spot-checking your oxygen saturation (SpO2) and your pulse rate and intensity. It helps determine the health of your lungs and the exchange of oxygen between your lungs and your blood. Designed for both adults and children in the home and hospital environment (including clinical use, surgery, anesthesia, intensive care etc.).
While at home, it is critical to ensure that you are monitoring your health and taking steps to ensure an active lifestyle, even in isolation. Blood carries oxygen through the combination of red blood cells and oxygen, the higher the oxygen content in the blood, the better the metabolism of the person. The oxygen saturation is an indication of respiratory function and the overall physical condition.
As per interim guidance from World Health Organization (WHO) , in a young adult, Severe Pneumonia accompanied by high fever or a respiratory anomaly and a SpO2 level of less than or equal to 93% is one of the major symptoms of pneumonia. While in children, symptoms are cough with difficulty in breathing and a SpO2 level of less than or equal to 90%. A normal healthy person should be able to achieve SpO2 levels of 94% to 99%. For patients with mild respiratory diseases, the SpO2 should be 90% or above.

The pulse oxygen saturation is the percentage of the oxygen saturation/concentration (SpO2) in your blood. It is an important bio-parameter for the respiration. The ideal way of measuring your blood oxygen saturation is by using a pulse oximeter. A person just has to put his/her finger into the device and a fingertip photoelectric sensor does the work and calculates your oxygen saturation in your blood as a percentage. While this device does not diagnose the condition of your lungs, you can find out your baseline reading and monitor this overtime to see if there are any changes over time.
SpO2 monitor is not designed to be a medical device, and is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease. All data and measurements should be used for personal reference only. If you notice that your SpO2 levels are below the normal levels for a prolonged period, please call your doctor for consultation.
Why do blood oxygen levels matter?
When you breathe in air, tiny capillaries in your lungs absorb the oxygen, allowing it to enter into your bloodstream. Red blood cells then carry that oxygen to tissue throughout your body, including your brain and other vital organs. A low oxygen level in your blood could lead to low oxygen in your tissues, and, ultimately, organ failure. Pulse oximeters may be useful because blood oxygen saturation levels that start trending downward could be a sign that your lungs are faltering and that you need to call your doctor.
ideally, you would know your baseline level for the device’s reading to be most meaningful.

- Measurement Performance in Weak Filling Condition: SpO2 and pulse rate can be shown correctly when pulse-filling ratio is 0.4%. SpO2 error is ±4%, pulse rate error is ±2 bpm during the pulse rate range of 30 bpm ~ 99 bpm and ±2% during the pulse rate range of 100 bpm ~ 250 bpm .
- Resistance to surrounding light: The deviation between the value measured in the condition of man-made light or indoor natural light and that of darkroom is less than ±1%.
- Equipped with a function switch: Will enter standby mode when no signal is in the product within 5 seconds.

I purchased four of these – one for me and three for gifts. They are easy to use and well constructed. The auto-off feature is nice. The display is clear and easy to read, although I sometimes need to use my reading glasses depending on the screen orientation (which changes the amount of information on the screen and the size of the font).
