Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome

Ehlers Danlos Syndrome (EDS) is a hereditary condition where patients present with hypermobility, soft-tissue hyperelasticity and overall fragility.

Preventing Wrist Pain at Home

Essentially, EDS causes the body’s tissues to have more stretch. There are different forms of EDS, depending on the specific gene affected. However, all subtypes present with hypermobility. Diagnosis is confirmed with genetic testing; however, patients are usually screen with the Beighton scale. If you think you may have EDS, we suggest you follow up with your health care provider.

Physiotherapy Exercises for EDS

Due to the complex nature and individual presentation, there is no set or standard protocol for exercise.  Physiotherapy research has found that aerobic conditioning (cardio) combined with low resistance and high repetition resistance training can increase joint stability through increased muscle tone.  It is important to remember the focus of this training is the control the joint.  Loads should be light, and movements should be slow and controlled.  This control can be further improved with proprioception exercises.  These principles can be applied to any joint!

Stabilizing Braces

Bracing can also help in stabilizing your joints.  Stabilizing Braces
are a great option for those who have hypermobility and dislocation issues! Ask one of our physiotherapists which braces or splint may be right for you!
