Breg VPulse vs Wave. Which is better?

What is The Difference Between Breg’s Vpulse and Wave Cold & Compression Therapy System?

What is the Main Difference?

The main difference between the Breg Vpulse and Wave cold therapy system is that the VPulse has the option of adding deep vein thrombosis (DVT) prevention treatment at the same time as cold and compression therapy at the joint.

Breg VPulse with DVT Calf Pads

The Breg Polar Care VPulse Cold Therapy & Compression system has the option of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) prevention treatment.  No other cold therapy system including the Wave currently has this feature!

The VPulse can utilize extra tubing and calf wraps we have to reduce the risk of DVT in patients that may be at higher risk.  Typically, there are expensive stand alone DVT prevention units that are prescribed in these situations that a patient can use following there total joint replacement at the same time as the cold and compression on the joint.  The VPulse is unique as it can do all these things in one unit.  It should be noted that you will need to purchase the DVT prevention pads separately to have this option.

The Breg Wave Cold and Compression Therapy System does not have a deep vein thrombosis (DVT) prevention option.

Below are some other small differences between the 2 systems.

The Breg Polar Care Wave Has 2 Adjustable Temperature & Compression Settings

Breg Wave 2 Cold and 2 Compression Settings

  • Regular Compression = 50 mmHg average peak compression
  • Low Compression  = 25 mmHg average peak compression
  • Colder ≥ 45°F average operating temperature of the pad
  • Cold ≥ 50°F average operating temperature of the pad

We have found that most people use the higher compression & temperature settings.

  • Regular = 50 mmHg average peak compression
  • Cold ≥ 55°F average operating temperature of the pad

Do they both carry the same amount of liquid/ice and stay cold for the same amount of time?

The Ice/Water capacity is very similar. The VPulse comes with 2 re-usable plastic ice bottles which are very convenient. BREG also sells special ziplock bags that can be used in the same way for the Wave unit. Both of these options can extend the time cold and reduce the need for ice cubes.

Which Breg Cold Therapy System closer mimics the Game Ready System?

They both closely mimic the Game Ready system. The main advantage in choosing the Breg Cold Therapy System is that the cost for owning a brand new unit and pad vs renting a used unit and pad from Game Ready is essentially the same, so owning a unit that you will likely use longer than 2 weeks makes sense.

Can I use 2 pads at once for the Breg Polar Care VPulse and Wave System?

Yes! The Y-Adapter will allow you to connect two pads at once. However, officially the Y adapter was designed for connecting 2 Knee pads as there was some concern that filling 2 larger pads like 2 hip pads at once might get close to using up most of the water in cooler. Talk with one of our specialists to see if the 2 pads you are thinking of connecting will work for you!

How loud are these units?

Both the Vpulse and Wave System are very quiet and in fact people definitely use them beside their bed while they sleep. The wave may be a bit quieter than the VPulse as it is very hard to hear the motor running on the wave. They both get a tiny bit noisier when going through the inflation cycle for compression which is about every minute or so. But again, they are still quiet compared to other units on the market.

In Summary Which is Better, The VPulse or Wave System?

And the winner is?

Well it depends.  Both of these cold therapy and compression systems are top of the line units in the market.  If you require the option of deep vein thrombosis prevention therapy, the VPulse unit is the one for you.  If you want a unit that can get a little bit colder, the VPulse unit is for you.

If however, you do not require DVT prevention therapy then the Wave is the better option.  It has 2 cold therapy and compression settings, uses newer technology and is the more economical choice.

They both use the exact same pads.  They both have the option to use 2 pads at once with the optional Y Adapter.   They both have continuous cold therapy that can last 6-8 hours.  They both have compression therapy.  They are both whisper quiet.  They both are good alternatives to renting a system like Game Ready.
