Night splints are typically worn during sleep to provide a prolonged stretch to the affected tissues.  They can help reduce pain, inflammation, and promote healing in the foot and ankle.  However, the choice between a foot dorsal night splint and a plantar night splint depends on the specific condition and the recommendations of a healthcare professional.  It is important to consult with a healthcare provider or a specialist to determine the most suitable type of night splint for an individual’s needs.

Here at the Physio Store we offer a wide selection of night splints.  There are mainly 2 types of night splints, the foot dorsal night splint and the plantar night splint!

The Foot Dorsal Night Splint is designed to stretch the muscles and soft tissues on the top (dorsal) side of the foot and ankle. It typically consists of a rigid or semi-rigid brace that supports the foot from the top. The splint keeps the foot in a dorsiflexed position, with the toes pointing upward. This position helps to stretch the calf muscles, Achilles tendon, and plantar fascia. Foot dorsal night splints are commonly used to manage conditions such as plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendinitis, and  limited ankle movement (contractures).

The Plantar Night Splint focuses on stretching the tissues on the bottom (plantar) side of the foot. It consists of a rigid or semi-rigid brace that holds the foot and ankle in a dorsiflexed position, with the toes pointing upward.  However, the main difference is that a plantar night splint also incorporates a boot or a footplate that supports the arch of the foot.  This design helps to maintain the arch in an extended position, stretching the plantar fascia and reducing the tension on the tissues.  Plantar night splints are often used for conditions such as plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendinitis, and heel spurs.

Both types of night splints are typically worn during sleep to provide a prolonged stretch to the affected tissues.  They can help reduce pain, inflammation, and promote healing in the foot and ankle.  However, the choice between a foot dorsal night splint and a plantar night splint depends on the specific condition and the recommendations of a healthcare professional.
